MOSQUITO RELATED DISEASES CLAIM 2 LIVES IN QUEENSLAND

Sydney 24  September, 2009

Queensland is experiencing the worst Murray Valley Encephalitis (MVE) outbreak in 50 years and has affected just over 1,000 people in North Queensland and one in every 1,000 bitten by a mosquito infected by MVE will contract the disease. One in four of these people will die from it. Children are most at risk. Despite there being no vaccine, Health authorities are advising people to protect themselves. Treatment and more importantly prevention is vital.
The alarming  news about mosquitoes in Australia is that in the past century, there have been an estimated 2 million infections, over 10 dengue fever epidemics and a death toll of over 1,000.

Mosquito related diseases are responsible for most human deaths on the planet. It is estimated that the mosquito kills anything between 1 million and 5 million people a year as they spread diseases including dengue fever and malaria. More than 300 million people are affected by mosquito related diseases worldwide. There is no vaccine therefore how we protect ourselves is vital.

There are many methods of control that can be implemented to reduce the number of mosquitoes. Local councils may use larvicides (pesticides that kill the larvae) which prevent mosquitoes from maturing to adults. Fogging has been used to kill adult mosquito populations and individuals use chemical repellents, usually that contain DEET. The problem with all of these methods is other problems that develop from chemical inhalation and with DEET, which is used in more than 230 products; the side effects can be quite alarming. Even the Environmental Protection Agency in the US cautions consumers that if they apply any product that contains DEET when outside, they should wash it off their skin immediately when they return indoors due to it’s toxicity Scientists writing in the open access journal BMC Biology suspect that DEET could have damaging effects to brain cells and central nervous system.

Children are more susceptible to subtle brain changes caused by chemicals in their environment because their skin more readily absorbs them. Their still-developing nervous systems are more potently affected. It is clear.. NEVER use an insect repellent containing DEET on infants.
The solution is to look for alternative products that contain DEET such as Aeroguard Roll on (containing 11.47% DEET) and BUSHMAN (containing 80% DEET);  products that do not use toxic chemicals.
